Background
The antibody to CD5 is used for the classification of lymphoid neoplasm. CD5 is exprimed by the majority of T-cell lymphoma and is also found on B-cells in some cases of chronic lymphatic leukaemia and centrocytic lymphoma. Normally it is not found in other forms of lymphoid neoplasm e.g. follicular lymphoma, Hairy Cell Lymphoma and Large Cell Lymphoma. CD5 is a lymphocyte surface molecule with a molecular weight of 67 kDa. It is exprimed by 95% of thymocytes and app. 72% of peripheral blood lymphocytes. In lymph nodes the antigen is detected in the T-cell region mainly. CD5 is over-expressed in leukaemia and T-cell lymphoma and may also be detected in a subpopulation of activated B-cells. Human CD5 molecule.
